INCOMING GUIDE- TIPS AND F.A.Q's

Welcome in Oldenburg. We hope you will enjoy your time here, we will try our best that you will have a nice time in Germany.

Here you will find usefull information.

Mobile Phone

Check if your mobile supports the right frequency for Europe. Also be aware that Germany could have a different electrical plug, grid frequency and/or voltage (Germany 230V, 50 Hz) than your home country. For more information see:
http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/f/ - consider buying an adapter.

For a SIM card, we recomend you to buy an aldi-talk in Aldi Supermaket since is the best price you can find. For example 5 GB of internet for 15 euros.

Housing

The house is called "Hermann Ehlers House" address:

Eichenstr. 105/107, 26131 Oldenburg.

If you need a confirmation that you got a room for your visa application, please contact us.

Arrived in Germany you have soon to sign your contract personally. The rent for your room will be paid by IAESTE Oldenburg directly from your salary.

Bed sheets won't be provided by the house administration. You need to bring your own bed sheets or buy them here at 15 euros each (approx).

Internet is provided by the house administration. Unfortunately, not as wifi but using an Ethernet cable. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet). If you want to use the internet with your laptop, bring a fitting cable (I recommend 5 meters long). However, there is a software called "connectyfi" that allows you to use your laptop as a Wi-fi hotspot. The house will provide you with 6 GB internet. Once you run out of it, your internet speed will significantly drop!

Payment

Your salary will be given to you every month in cash so you don't need to open up a German bank account. As the first payment will be one month after you started working, please bring enough pocket money to cover the first days. If you have troubles to arrange this, please contact us. Remember that the first weeks people tend to spend more, since they are likely to buy things that they have forgotten. Some students also book weekend trips to other cities.

Shopping

Be aware that shops are closed Sundays and on public holidays. So in case you arrive on one of these days make sure you got enough food to get by or ask your supporter for advice. However, restaurants are open on Sundays!

In the housing area are 2 big supermarkets: 1) Aldi: Where you can find really good deals! (and your sim card ;) 2) Edeka: A more expensive Supermarket but with better food quality.

Transportation

The public transportation can be really expensive. 2,30 euros per ride so if you want to go to the city center you will spend 4,6 (since you need to come back). An alternative solution will be to renting a bike: 20 euros per month (http://asta-oldenburg.de/service/fahrradwerkstatt/).

You can find the bikeshop at the following location:
